What a fantastic year it's been for 9Lies!

It was the year which saw the 'Behind It All' album being released to critical acclaim, with massive radio airplay around the globe, and all without a record company being involved! It was also the year which saw the song 'Blind' being snapped up by Warner Brothers, and 'Behind it All' the title track from the album finding a new home as theme tune to reality tv show 'Our Prisoner' in the USA. We've been beamed up and down from satellites around the world more times than we care to remember.

In the last 6 months alone 9Lies have travelled to Poland to play the Vena Music Festival to thousands of screaming fans, licensed a song (We R1) to Techno Sweat for use on their exercise Music CD's, 18000 people joined us on our 2 International Myspace sites and in the last 3 months we've gathered over 900 groupies since joining the Bebo social networking site, with fans placing our songs on over 1500 of their play lists!

The Song 'Slippin Away' has not only been downloaded online during the last year more than 29,000 times, but has more recently been chosen by ASCAP for excellence in song writing at the ASCAP Music Expo 07 in L.A.
Download sales on digital sites such as iTunes and Rhapsody have remained strong, as have Material Worldwide CD sales from our Online Music Store, and all of this is down to you! Thank you!!

It doesn’t end there though! The new album 'Halfway from Nowhere' is almost finished and sounding absolutely fantastic!! If you haven't already done so, then join the 9Lies Mailing list for free, to be kept up to date and receive free member offers!

For a while The Uptones' John Mader played drums, then Parisian drum prodigy Thierry Fill pounded the skins, and finally Berkeley rock jazzbo extraordinaire Tom Pope took over behind the kit. We toured the west coast a few times, released a CD cleverly titled "Hobo" and pondered the redwoods.

Common Rider was a band formed in 1988 by Jesse Michaels who was a veteran of the late punk/ska group Operation Ivy. Common Rider eventually came to include Mass Giorgini and Dan Lumley who were veterans of the groups Screeching Weasel and Squirtgun. Initially started as a recording only project, Common Rider went on to release a second album and be featured on the "Plea for Peace" tour in 2003.
Common Rider incorporates melodic punk rock and Rock Steady. The band broke up in 2003 for geographical reasons (the members lived in different states) but their two albums continue to please fans world wide.

Bettie Black

“My earliest memory was this little green radio I had. I memorized every song I heard." Bettie Black recalls growing up in the California suburbs. “I must've been 3 or 4 years old listening to everything coming out of my mom's car radio; lots of soul, disco, whatever; it got my attention.”

After moving to the Haight Ashbury in the 80's, Bettie began jamming with a lot of musicians from the vast wealth of local bands. “They liked my ideas and began encouraging me to write my own songs so one night I stayed up all night and by the morning had my first song. I was so excited; this opened the floodgates and songs just started pouring out of me.”

After a particularly transformative experience at a 1990 Iggy Pop show, Bettie realized
her destiny. “Iggy had the wild self expression I always wanted for myself. I knew there and then that music was the only thing for me.”

Her fascination of the theatrics of rock and roll led Bettie to pursue a degree in drama and performance at San Francisco State University. After graduation, she fronted several acclaimed bands in the San Francisco club scene such as Glow and Runaway Bunny. This led to her first record. Since then, she has continued to write new and innovative material, drawing from her daily experiences. “I feel like I have a channel within me that constantly sends me riffs and scraps of melodies.”

With churning guitars and driving bass and drums, Bettie's music provides a large and relentless backdrop to the undeniable and universal heartache of healing the human condition. The darkness of the music is punctuated by the ultimate confidence and strength of her words. There is no mistaking her voice. It's a clear and present, unbridled understanding of the struggle of the human spirit. “I am happiest when I'm writing and playing. It's who I am. I will never stop.” Bettie Black is preparing for her new CD release in May 2006.

Son of Pete began appearing onstage at Earth Quake shows in and around the Bay Area. He retold "The Saga of Yukon Pete," the storied sexual encounter between his infamous father and Big Ass Lil. His recording career took a strange twist when he switched from **** to patriotism and his label at the time Organ Records dropped him. The maverick record label Beserkley understood this genius and released his magnificent work "Mankind" on July 4th, 1976, our nation's bicentennial. The rest is history. Upon accepting many of the world's highest honors for recognizing the simple truth, Son of Pete become extremely humble. Silence became his only method of expression, releasing only one more musical gem, "Silent Knight," Bz 5746. He can be found wandering the Berkeley Hills observing nature and mankind.

Formed in 1981 in Berkeley, while they were still in high school. The Uptones were the first band devoted to playing Ska on the West Coast. The Uptones played to skanking crowds all over the West. Several of their recordings were regional hits, and for a time they were the most popular band in the Bay Area.
Major publications of the time raved about them:

"It is a sight to behold, The Uptones tearing up the stage and the audience tearing up the dance floor." - San Francisco Chronicle

"The Uptones... without a doubt the best show in Berkeley." - Berkeley Free Press

"Sitting down at an uptones show is like keeping your eyes shut at a movie." - Rolling Stone

The Uptones "Live at Gilman Street" (SOB CD 005 is a living proof of the raw power the band delivered every show.

"Best live Ska record ever" - Crawdaddy Magazine

"***** Five Stars "This record rocks from beginning to end." - Rolling Stone

Several tracks from this legendary recording are offered for free in the mp3 format at www.uptones.com.

Members of the original band, Eric Uptone, Paul Jackson, and Bennie Wood have been playing music together since then.

First as Hobo, and then as Stiff Richards.

The ska bug never left these lads. And now Eric, Paul, and Bennie are joined by Moose Lethridge, Adam Beach, Tim Carter, Jeanne Geiger, and Scott Bertrand to form the current lineup of The Uptones.

The Uptones are in the process of recording new original material for their upcoming CD "Skanking Fools Unite" with producers Matthew King Kaufman and Michael Rosen for the Beserkley label.

After studying human hand clapping for years at Count Slowly's academy of music and zymurgy, Peculiar struck out on his own. His mysterious disappearance before his second recording session in the karioke booth at Magic Mountain still remains one of the music world's greatest unsolved mysteries. Bellyfloppin Deejay is the only existing recording by Peculiar and the Prettyboiz. It was made only hours before their last show.

AutoBiography by Cyn Acevedo

I was in a band in 1999. I wrote all the songs. That band was on
the verge of disaster and I needed to make money, so I took my
voice to a karaoke contest. Thats where I met Miguel. Who introduced
me to drummer/producer Doug Carlson. I had a meeting with Doug in
his studio along with Miguel and Ry Kihn. Ry has a band who was
also working with Doug back then (2003). I played a few songs for
them acoustic and a cd demo that I had previously done. Doug really
liked it and wanted to begin working with me. Ry who is an awesome
guitar player agreed to help out on this new project as well and we
started this "Cyn Project". Doug hired a few more studio musicians
to play on the record we were planning to record. We began recording.
After we made enough songs for a demo we shopped it to a few record
companies, while still working on more recordings. We had some
interest from a few labels but the consensus was, I needed a band
to play live with before anyone (record labels) would take any
action. So I started looking for a band. A young, good-looking
group of guys that could play as good as the record would sound.
It took a long time to find that. I went through many players.
Its almost 2007. The album is complete and will be coming out soon
and I've got a killer band (see the members listing below) smashing
out the music note for note. To put a cherry on it we finally got a
real name, Resistant Me. So now we'll be playing shows in the bay
area promoting the album and setting rock-n-roll fires on stages near
you. Thanx for taking time to know the history. Its been a long road
and I still got some more traveling to do. ~Cyn

When not rehearsing, recording, and playing Guitar Hero on PS2, you may find the guys loitering in the North Mississippi neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, where Pierre has been sighted carrying on long conversations with himself. Please be patient with him.

Blend one part ska with one part punk, add a Latina twist and a splash of eye candy, and you have got yourself the tasty alternative cocktail otherwise known as La Muñeca Y Los Muertos. Guitarist/vocalist Muñeca Osorio leads the groove, along with other Bay Area musicians David Simon-Baker on lead guitar and backing vocals, Kristin Lo Bianco on bass, Nick Lee on Trombone, and Matt Cohen on drums. With original music written and composed by Osorio and other band members, the band puts on an energetic show, exploring themes such as awareness, positive perspective, and realizing full human potential. The music even provides a sliver of education, songs are written in both English and Spanish. Influences include: Oingo Boingo, Bersuit, Mana, and the Pixies.

Osorio began as a poet, but a love of guitar lead her to begin fusing the two. She began performing in the Los Angeles area and later in the San Francisco Bay area with the full band. La Muñeca Y Los Muertos is currently working on a full-length debut able that is slated for release in the summer of 2007, followed by a promotional west coast tour.

MEET ME AT THE PUB from Venice Beach, California, formed in 1999. Jeremy, Sully and Jack started playing their first shows at da damn legendary Malibu Inn every Monday night, soon building a rapid local fan base with the local surfers and skaters. Their early shows helped the band find their true Southern California style combinin' melodic vocals, some solid whup' and dumpin' bass lines. Following in the foot steps of local legends likes Fishbone, Sublime, Baaaad Religion and Suicidal Tendencies.

Their early shows were full of energy fueled by beer, Tequila and some of the finest ganja. WORD! The fans would throw bar stools; Holmes would be rockin' back flips, the bar tenda' would be hangin' from the rafters and by the end of the night the damn crowd would plow through the drums bustin' bones and destroying their gear. Ah be baaad...

MEET ME AT THE PUB recorded their first album "Live at da damn Malibu Inn" from 2001-2003 and only had 1000 copies pressed. Thats where such live classics as Drunk Again and Drunk Freestyle were born. The CD is very rare but be a true pub classic that included live versions of Ganja, Trip, Plate Chick, Monday Night and 18 other beats.

In 2003, the band hit the studio and recorded their self titled CD. Using their own studio, the band were able to record 14 tracks that captured the energy only known from their live shows. Tens of thousands of albums were sold in the US and the UK on the bands own label and wth the help of the internet, fans were spreading the word about De Pub! Right on!

They continued playing live shows in California and established their fust UK tour in 2004 playing to sold out crowds all upside Engalnd. In 2004 they were fortunate enough to record with Brian Wallace who played with Sublime on 40z to freedom.

The band cut a quick EP called De Black n Honky Sessions which included the beats of Better Days, Creep and Coming Down. Thet have shared the stage with Fishbone, LB Shortbus, Half Pint, The Untouchables, b foundashun, Horny Toad, VoodooGlow Skulls, Common Sence and other great local bands.
Johnny 9 and the Racers

Most bands of today seem boring and depressing, as if their puppies were run over. Johnny 9 and the Racers is different; playing live shows filled with enough energy to convert the saddest of concert goers into a fan.

Johnny 9 and the Racers formed over five years ago by the same six members who share the stage today. They have developed a strong following of dedicated fans by mixing the upbeat ska rhythms of The Specials and the pop/punk edge of The Descendents with catchy pop hooks in the vein of Elvis Costello. The band released their Easier Said Than Done EP which sold over 200 copies in less than a year from show and mail order sales alone. CTska.com described it as: "A great collection of fun and catchy sing along songs that you'll want to get up and dance along to." The self produced EP also scored a substantial amount of radio play on dozens of East Coast college radio stations. Underground Sounds soon followed in 2006. This music/interactive web CD featured their entire discography as well as unreleased B-sides, live songs, and newly recorded tracks. The CD's limited pressing quickly sold out after just two shows, evidence of the band's popularity in the Connecticut music scene.

Johnny 9 and the Racers has played numerous shows with bands such as: Big D and the Kids Table, The Voodoo Glow Skulls, Big Wig, Go Betty Go, The Planet Smashers, The Toasters, Westbound Train, Cenzo, The Code, The F-Ups, and Lost City Angels as well as many other local and national touring acts. Fans of different music genres are won over by the band's charisma and energy onstage. J9's technically tight horn and rhythm sections are capable of transitioning from rock n' roll to ska/reggae with ease.

In 2006, the band stepped into Dexter's Lab Studio with producer Nick Bellmore to record their first full length album titled Open Up Your Ears. The eight hour days of nonstop work produced 8 songs of high energy ska/rock/pop. In regards to the new CD, NorthEastSka.com stated, "[Johnny 9 and the Racers] put on a stellar live show and capture it in their newly released record Open Up Your Ears." With the album slated for release in April 2006 and an East Coast tour planned for the summer, the band is sure to gain a large following along the Atlantic seaboard.

Lucky Man Clark

The politically charged sophomore effort from artist/producer Joe "Guido" Welsh and his band Lucky Man Clark. This time out Guido eschews the multitudes of famous guest stars in favor of cranking out some good old rock guitar on his own. This record is chock full of juicy classic rock guitar riffs and um.. very frank and blunt social commentary. Get it?

He gets right to the point with "Where'd My America Go?" by wondering aloud what happened to all "our wonder and promise" and complains in "Four More Years" about our current polarization and where we're headed as a nation. Ann Coulter, conservative attack goddess, is skewered in "My Girlfriend (Is No Ann Coulter)". "Lah-Dee-Dah" blasts an uneducated electorate of "faux news" viewers for their decidedly righteous beliefs.

This recording is not all complete disgust and doom and gloom. Guido observes the race to get Cat Stevens in the very funny "Yusef's Lament" and provides a bundle of laughs with "Alone in the House" by appearing to merge Green Day with Brian Wilson harmonies and dancing with bra-clad pets. In "Postal" he encourages his lover to not "dare ever leave me" or suffer the consequences. All with tongue firmly planted in cheek. A rocking good record for our current economic slump!

Disc available online at Amazon, Tower, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc.

The Apocalyptic Robot Crew, ARC for short, formed on the scene like Voltron in 2004 when the mysteries of life became so great for the four members that they had to start a band in order to make things clear. It's been years since then and things have not gotten much clearer... Sly Q. Jones leads the band whose microphone rocking skills are unquestionable. Although not originally a founding member he was drafted by the guitarist Gary Bossanova and synthesizer expert Burt Bannister because neither of them could sing. Several hours after the recording of their first song it was decided that they reach deeper into the void to pull out Fancy Johnson and make him into the electric tambourine guru he is today. Their music cannot be described with any known human adjectives, but some dogs have been known to describe the music as "bark" and "woof". Their inspirations range from Ennio Morricone's classic western themes to 80's Hip-Hop and Electronic music... At first glance, the band seems to be from the future, in fact, they claim they are, just to confuse everyone. The band is all about confusing their fans; which is why they constantly change their name. They have gone by names like: "Spectre Junction" and "Kosmonots", just so things don't get boring. In fact, boredom is the band's worst enemy. In July of 2004 the band officially made a declaration of war on boredom, and promised to find out where it hid and to root it out and eliminate it once and for all. It's ideas like these that keep their fans from walking away.

Marco Esu

Marco Esu was born in San Gavino Monreale (a small town in Sardinia) on 16 December 1973. He took his first steps in the art world when he was just 8 years old, initially showing interest in the figurative arts. Subsequently, thanks to his sisters who were studying piano, Marco began to take an interest in music and with some help from them, he learned his first tunes.

When he was about fifteen years old, Marco began to study the guitar and create his first melodies in his own distinctive style, eventually making him stand out from the others in his field. Being self-taught initially and listening to a wide range of musical styles, including Jazz, he grew to love improvisation, which will often feature widely in most of his concerts.

Having studied the guitar for two years, Marco then decided to learn the technical side of music from Antonello Lixi, a guitarist he held in high esteem. Lixi taught him the technique and theory involved with his instrument and also instilled in him a passion for South American music, which was an important part of the maestro's repertoire at the time. Marco also studied with other maestri like Patrice Graff (otherwise known as "Tito"), Jorge Cardoso at a specialisation course in classical guitar and other specialisation courses arranged by maestro Marco Meloni, the director of "la Nuova Accademia".

When he was sixteen, Marco began to play in bands as their solo guitarist, moving from one genre to another. This experience enabled him to learn more and more styles of music and taught him to appreciate the pleasure of performing for an audience, something that he adores.

In 1994 Marco won a regional competition for electric guitars (solo 6 corde) by presenting improvised tunes for the guitar and a beautiful composition by guitarist Joe Satriani (Midnight).

Marco performed with groups like Slamina and Wizard but it was Axioma that had considerable success with the public and also some journalists who wrote some interesting articles about them. Axioma's musical genre was barely acceptable in Sardinia and was practically censored due to the band's "Rock" style. However, thanks to their fans and concerts dedicated to Rock and Metal music, they were still able to perform their repertoire and produced their own CD.

Axioma featured Marco Esu at the guitar, Giovanni Serra at the bass, Giuseppe Melis on drums and Emanuele Pittau was the singer and responsible for lyrics. Fabrizio Melas had been the band's first drummer and it was with him that the band was initially formed.

Marco took up his solo career again in 1996, setting his dear friend, song-writer and singer, Simone Utzeri's lyrics to music. Together with Simone, Marco was able to sing in various venues and musical festivals and some favourable articles were written about their artistic musical achievements and poetic work.

Marco and Simone then formed another band, which they called S.A.A.S.D.N.A. The band, which specialised in experimental music, featured Andrea Ruggeri on drums and Stefano Porceddu on bass and were later joined by Emanuele Contis on the saxophone, Matteo Muntoni on the bass and Valentina Urban as the singer and on the violoncello. They performed the drummer's compositions, which were arranged by the band. At the same time, Marco decided to also perform in the "Marco Esu Duo", which participated in the Sant'Anna Arresi International Jazz Festival, one of the most important jazz events in Sardinia. Marco then worked with fashion designer, Zigno (who he respects and admires for his brilliance) and with him, he was able to perform his compositions live on television and in many other fashion parades with Sardinian designers of haute couture and famous models.

It was thanks to the fashion parades that Marco was also able to work with the great Sardinian painter, Sergio Putzu, who is very interested in social problems and the maintenance of popular traditions.

With all these experiences behind him, Marco then worked with the on-line newspaper, Capitanata.it and wrote a number of articles for their music section. The Internet proved to be invaluable for him in publicising his most recent work during September 2003.

After an initial presentation period on their site, Marco signed a contract with Sabino Mogavero at Idyllium s.n.c., who found him ideal for his style of publishing. At the same time, his involvement with Italian sites like Jazzitalia.net and "Portare la musica - a group of young and famous Italian musicians, bound by the aim of offering music, a gift they themselves received, to those who would otherwise not have access to it.
Offering high-level concerts to the disabled, the ill, elderly people, inmates, children in need, we try to contribute in destroying the walls of prejudice and selfishness and to realise an exchange of experiences and communication." also helped him to learn a great deal and to raise his profile.

Marco's new CD was completed after this period and he called it "U.S.E. Angiola". The CD features ten classic guitar tracks in various styles. The CD's success enables him, together with his publisher at Idyllium, to obtain an international recording contract with Australian record producing company, Blue Pie Productions. It is thanks to its CEO, Damien Reilly, that the CD will be released in various countries, like Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Canada and Italy. The CD already appears on many soundtracks in Australia.

Marco has many plans for the future, including a new CD and more musical and artistic publications. Amongst the many artists with whom he has performed on the same stage are names like Andrea Parodi (a talented singer with a number of recordings), Piero Marras and Elena Ledda, Timoria and Flor de Mal. He has also been professionally involved with fashion designers from all over Sardinia and London, models and presenters like Ambra Pintore or Arianna Accorte, who are both models and TV presenters and Valentino Meloni. Also important to mention are Marco's participation in a number of peace demonstrations and musical events. …

The brain is a wonderful thing. It molds anything into what we expect it to be. Noise is an excellent genre to notice this facility. Bleeding Ears' music triggers all those patterns that are at the base of my love for industrial and electronic music. His rhythmic devices are interesting and trance inducing and combined with the choice of sounds and effects, an atmosphere is created that is hard to describe at all objectively. Words that describe the mood for me: Heaven, Hell, Machines, birth (out of Chaos), Tribal Dance and Sweet Decay reclaiming every form of structure the mind created from it.

Junkyard Empire

In the tradition of Mos Def, Immortal Technique, Public Enemy, the Welfare Poets and Gil Scott Heron, Junkyard Empire is quickly revealing their intention not just to sound good, but to make a real difference. They are striving to be much more than another great alternative live hip-hop band from Minnesota, joining the ranks of P.O.S., Atmosphere, Hirespects, and Leroy Smokes. They want to become a musical force for political and social change in America, playing the music that could be called the soundtrack to the missing revolution in America. Alas, it is not only the politically and socially progressive lyricism of MC Brihanu that sets the band apart, but also the modern jazz fluency of the players, bringing to the set a truly diverse range of influences. As Dwight Hobbes put it, "The combination of Brihanu's forceful lyrics, set to an engaging cadence, and the band's compositions is nothing short of incredible. Think Mos Def meets Ornette Coleman." Damn good company to be in the room with. Junkyard Empire came together in the summer of 2006, after bandleader Christopher Robin Cox (trombone/keyboard) decided it was time to bring in a rapper and re-tool the overall sound and approach of Leo Bixby Music, the name used by Cox for many years. He had versions of the LBM in both New Orleans and New York City, where the band played such venues as the Knitting Factory, the Sidewalk Cafe, the C-Note, the Metropolitan Cafe, and many underground clubs as well. In 2002, Christopher decided to take a long break from leading a band, touring much of the world on cruise ships as an orchestra musician. Along the way, he published many essays, short stories, and even began a book, which seems to be forever in progress. In the end, he went back to school, this time instead of music he studied political science. Being sent to Minnesota for a job as a political organizer, he fell in love with Saint Paul, and decided to stay. It was impossible to stay away from the infectious music scene here, so Leo Bixby Music was re-assembled, becoming Junkyard Empire during the summer. The band, between both names, has already graced the stage at such clubs as the Uptown Bar, the Red Sea Bar, the Fusion Music Cafe (formerly French Press Jazz Club), the Fine Line, Mayslack's Music Lounge, and has even opened up for the New Congress at the one and only Bunker's Music Bar. Now that the band has begun to develop a little buzz, and are in the throws of bringing in a new guitar player and sax player, Junkyard Empire is planning to take a short hietus to write some new material and hit the studio for their debut recording. The goal is to have something recorded and ready for distribution, either virtually or in hard copy, by the end of March. You can be rest assured that this band will not waste its time making a record that doesn't have a damn strong statement to go along with the already strong music. In MC Brihanu's own words: "It's important, when you have the platform, to say something that has substance." We all can think of some folks who need to hear that, and if all goes well, they will in the near future.

Eftos

Eftos started 1984 with Peek, Poke & Data in C64-Basic on the famous C64. Later on that machine he came first in contact with a 3 channel SID tracker. After the C64 era he switched to the Amiga to track more stuff, 4 channel first and later in 8 channel with Octalyzer 8 Bit Tracker. In the 1990s a PC was bought and new Trackers tried. The first one was Composer 669, a 16 channel 8 Bit Tracker and later Screamtracker which Eftos descided to use as Adlib Tracker (no samples only synths). Clearly, all of the above efforts failed and just got him into composing. The next step was Windows and the awful .MID format which he edited in Midisoft recording session. It was a waste of time, too. Having learned only little about the mistake, he uses Soundfonts (Technolab) and Midisoft recording session to finish his first acceptable pieces. However, only 1 of them is still part of EFTOS.DE as of today: "Hoax Universe" (which was also the first song without looping the main lead). After all those effords he discovered the software he still uses up to now: Modplug Tracker, a 16 Bit multi-channel, instrument-supported Windows tracker based on the famous Impulse Tracker and processing the IT format. One short note here: 16 Bit Samples together with Instrument-support and the Editing advantages of a tracker is up to now unbeatable. Eftos will never use Renoise or other Editors. He is a Tracker, still. On Modplug Tracker all other songs are composed. His entire work, the work of his lifetime is compressed into one CD "Local Sense Technology". Of course he did more songs, weaker as they were, they were killed entirely. There's too much music out and with this step Eftos trys not to pollute things. His latest change was discovering the DARK-Scene, wich he contributed to with a 8-Piece EP "Leadcore" consisting of (in order of relevance): "The uncrowded Nature" "Truth Nonexistence" "All a lie" "Antiverse" "Self-destruct Intelligence" "It is not" "Suiright" & "Ten Commandments". Eftos is proud to have invented the new genre "Leadcore" where a lead is base of the song, weather it is atonal, polytonal or plain. Those leads do not loop a single time throughout the song and follow strict non-repetitive rules. Also the latest songs truly get to the border of the WAV format & beyond...

After 8 years of work on his debut CD "Local Sense Technology" (1999-2006) Eftos has started composing his last CD "Art Prime" in 2006, planned release 2016. The self-set goal (one CD in a lifetime) needs further evaluation: "Essential Eftos" - the best of Eftos CD, the merging of "Local Sense Technology" and "Art Prime". This result is published through EFTOS.DE under the section "Essential".

LaeCharles T. Lawrence Jr. is notorious for his strong work ethic, immutable love of all ladies, unmistakable sense of humor and grand entertainment talent. His earliest training, reading music as well as improvisational jazz trumpet, grouped him with local talents the likes of Joshua Redman and Miles Perkins during his days in Berkeley public schools. Lae played both trumpet and trombone.

After school he was one of the youngest members of URBAN NOISE, a ska band fronted by punk rock talent Tim Armstrong who went on to form RANCID. Laes career took a pivotal turn when he stepped up from the back of the band to take his natural position as the rhyme busting front man. He developed a Bay Area cult following with the ground breaking group ALL STAR DELICIOUS, and then later collaborated with the MC's of LA powerhouse punk group TEN G BOB, Max Golay and Zach McLain, with MARVIN MEANS MARVELOUS.

Lae came to realize that the only way to genuinely satisfy his musical aspirations was to pursue his own unique vision. Knowing the only way to cultivate his dreams would be to capture and create his unique reality, Lae set up a home studio. Armed with 10 songs written on his payment-plan home computer program Lae approached Steve Bradley (of NO DOUBT) and Dave Tweedy of the international production team CHOCOLATE O'BRIAN. Impressed by the concepts and tracks he had conceived, they teamed up to create the CD that brought light on everything you thought you knew about love, hip-hop and life, Lae is Johnny Eastbay.

Saturna is the rock ‘n’ roll band you want to listen to before, during, and after the party. Their debut EP …All Night serves up a tantalizing cocktail of ethereal guitars and riveting drums, tender harmonies and heart-ripping hooks.

With a swirl of melody and a pulsing drift of guitar, the wordless beauty of “Springboard” launches your night. You sip a vodka tonic, and you’re off. You plunge straight into the city blasting “Pop Rocks.” The tick-tock drums and fuzzed-out Love & Rockets-style vocals spark something ferocious inside you. You finish another drink and drop your glass. You lose your friends, your money, and half your senses, but the sexy bassline keeps looping through your brain. It’s not enough. You want more. More. So the night gets nastier: “Just for Thrills” slashes you with dirty riffs. You sneer and smile, blurring through bars and parties. Streets and cars and clubs and shows. The song drags you snarling through an underworld of twisted love, but then the harmonic chorus shimmers above the rumble. For a moment you can think. Where are you? What did you just do with who? Forget it. Too late. You’ve passed the turning point and begun the long glide toward dawn with “Blanket of Stars.” Finally, in the melancholic “Chasing the Unpredictable,” you face the sun and try to figure out what it all meant. One thing is certain: you want Saturna’s …All Night again.

Charismatic Ryan Carroll graces lead vocals and rhythm guitar; while Eric Block, the most unassuming rock god in America, manhandles lead guitar; and Steve Anderson, detail-crazed genius inventor, takes on drums, bass, and backup vocals.

Mixing swagger and sweetness, Saturna soundtracks your whole night—from sundown to downtown to dawn.

Sorrow Town Choir

What happens when exceptionally discerning and young, prodigious musicians — men with scarred hearts and punk rock roots — grow up and become functioning members of society? Toss in fate and years of talent into the equation and you have Sorrow Town Choir, a Bay-Area mainstay band with its own signature sound, fueling an original and recent atypical rock genre movement that only a handful of underground bands have lately tapped. This category, in a phrase, is deemed: “Deep Crisis Rock.”

STC’s origins stretch back to 1979 when Joe Heavey sold Greg Dale his first guitar for $20. During the following years, Dale self-taught himself to play with his own distinctive flair and in the mid-’90s eventually coupled with talented bass-player, Mark Paniagua, via Dale’s previous project, Jill the Witch — whose list of former members includes such underground favorites as Warner Brothers recording artist, Bomb.

Although STC’s line-up was by and large shaped in 2003, the rock outfit was not fully recognized as an emerging talent until ex-pat kiwi, James Flynn, joined the band on drums the following year. Flynn tried out with several bands before finding STC. Flynn recalls: “Sorrow Town Choir exuded passion and humility, the way life is when you cut away façades — I decided I had to be in this band.” But it was Heavey who tied STC’s destiny into a perfect circle. After seeing a show at Hotel Utah, Heavey approached his friend of 25-plus years, telling Dale: “I’m your new keyboardist.” …Thus, Sorrow Town Choir, as it is today, was solidified.

“…As it Should Be,” STC’s first release, was tracked and mixed in 2004. The recording’s honest, soulful cuts earned praised for having a unique, deep, dark and haunting quality. STC has been compared to a wide-range of bands and solo acts, from Neil Young, Nick Cave, Lucero, Mark Lanegan, Drive By Truckers; to obvious and unsurpassed quintessentials such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. STC has performed in many of the Bay Area’s legendary music venues, including: 12 Galaxies, The Eagle Tavern, Pound SF, Tongue and Groove, Covered Wagon, Studio Z and the Red Devil Lounge. The band’s musical influences include Jane’s Addiction, Tom Waits, Blues Explosion, Pink Floyd, Screaming Trees, Beasts of Bourbon, Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones.

Where there is sorrow, there is holy ground.

Joe Heavey is currently also recording with Powder Wheel, and is a former member of Splatt, Groove Pigs, and Welcome Matt. Greg Dale additionally performs as a solo artist, and is the former front man for Jill the Witch. Mark Paniagua is currently also in local avant-garde rockers Ringchildren. James Flynn is the awesomely resourceful, rock-steady glue that holds these boys together, in more ways than one.

Negativity lives in me while I'm positively pushing on with no remorse for my altered course. Melodic intuitiveness and lyrical influences make my Heaven on Earth more real than I can accept.

Inner Surge

Inner Surge is an intense, politically and emotionally charged metal/rock band from Calgary, Canada. The band has been described as "one of the best imports that Canada has to offer" by RWS Magazine. With an eclectic, intense approach, the band fuses metal, rock, punk, hardcore and progressive influences. As opposed to conforming to the 'meathead' mentality of heavy metal and hard rock, Inner Surge's energy is focused on breaking those stereotypes down, and pushing boundaries, both lyrically and musically.

The band was formed in 2001 by Steve Moore, who wrote and recorded the debut album "Solus Verum", a 16-track epic with an intensely personal lyrical approach. The next album "Matrika", was released to excellent reviews. Space Junkies Magazine gave it 10+ out of 10, while Bands United described it as "Disturbingly fresh". The album has been critically acclaimed and has earned them positive reviews in many magazines & websites. Inner Surge's "Matrika" also made Punkcanada.net's "Top 10 of 2004" list and was re-released in 2006 by Cyclone Records and is available through Napster and Sony Connect.

Inner Surge has played many shows such as Warped Tour 2006 at Race City Speedway alongside Helmet and Underoath, the "Rock against Racism 2002 and 2005" concerts in Calgary, the annual CJSW 90.9 Metal Fundraiser and the Southern Alberta Hardcore & Metal Festival alongside acts such as Into Eternity and Caveat. The band has also organized it's own benefit concerts for charities such as Operation Eyesight Universal and the Evan Shaw Foundation.

Inner Surge's music will appear on the Macabro Films movie soundtrack for the psychological thriller "Amok!", due for release in 2007. Information on Macabro Films is at www.macabrofilms.com. The band will also be featured on the official movie soundtrack for horror film "Cabras". Directed by Fredy Polania, the film is due for release in late 2007. Information on this film is at www.cabrassoundtrack.com. Inner Surge is also featured on the Paladin Pictures film score for "Rebellion of Thought", which debuted to a sold out audience at the Virginia Film Festival. Phat Mountain Film's most recent DVD release "Divided Aggression" features 4 of the band's songs as well.

Inner Surge's music video for "Retribution Song" explores the band's political views and was partially inspired by the largely ignored Uzbekistan massacre as well as the Zapatista's(EZLN). The video is available at Google video, myspace.com, youtube.com and www.cabrassoundtrack.com for download. The band's second music video for "Wolves" will be directed by Shaun Friesen of Free Zen Design.

Inner Surge was featured in the new book by Garry Sharpe-Young "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" alongside Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, and Norma Jean. Inner Surge's artist Shaun Friesen does all the band's artwork and works on their videos through his company Free Zen Design.

Inner Surge is included on the Convergence Party Recordings benefit compilation called "Dismantle The Machinery: Songs of Audio Annihilation". Other artists included on the compilation include the Brat Attack, The Martyr Index, Dying Process, Fuck the Facts and the Renegades of Punk. The band has also appeared on many compilation CD's and DVD's including Canadian metal compilation the Fire Union, Skratch Magazine's compilation CD, where Inner Surge appears alongside Converge and Hot Water Music, political DVD release "When Today Becomes Tomorrow", Phat Mountain Films 2006 extreme sports DVD "Divided Aggression", Atom Sounds Records compilation, Synaptic Graffiti's latest release and Cyclone Record's 2006 release "Storm Warning: Volume 1". Inner Surge has also become very popular on various online podcasts and radio shows such as Headbanger's Lab, Fat Cat Radio, Hard Beyond Driven, Public Nuisance Radio, Platform Podcast, Politipunk, Cindycenter, Scrub Radio, the Big Break, and Cyclone Record's Eye of the Storm podcast. Inner Surge is promoted by Cyclone Records.

Inner Surge's newest album is the critically acclaimed and groundbreaking "Signals Screaming", an 11 track assault on human rights abuses and what the band sees as the international "blind eye". Released April 1 2006 through Cyclone Records, the album has been well received by both fans and music critics. "Signals Screaming" is being hailed as "one of the most essential metal albums of the year" from "one of Canada's most promising and most modern-sounding metal bands out there today." The lyrics cover themes such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide in "Wolves", the massacre of peaceful protesters in Uzbekistan in 2005 in "Retribution Song", the repression of the FDA in "No Profit in the Cure", and what the band describes as "self serving corporate groups on the road to destroying themselves". Canadanoise.com says "Signals Screaming is a battering-ram of an album that is impressive and powerful, both in sound and in message. Delivered through a screaming fury along with sung words that are weighted with disdain, the force of its lyrics is impossible to shut out."

Inner Surge's intense and honest sound has given the band a fast-growing following, and with plans for a new album on the horizon, the word is sure to spread.

The Michetons were born from fever and sweat. The fever—small town boredom infected by a burning desire to create music. The sweat—what poured forth when the five young men first congregated in vocalist Matt Heath’s garage, oblivious to the rising temperatures and aware only of the undeniable artistic chemistry between them. These same forces continue to define the quintet’s refreshingly dynamic and emotive live performance.

Having spent the last three years gigging as The Hills, forging a grassroots fan base and promotional network in the San Francisco Bay Area, The Michetons have embarked on a series of regional tours to support their debut EP, released January 27, 2007 on Bright Antenna Records. Four grueling months in the studio—a process they describe as a “happy exhaustion”—have not only produced a spectacular record but strengthened the band’s commitment to each other and their shared vision of artistic success.

“In a time when it seems like everything is either coming or going, in or out of style…one common goal unites this band: to create genuine rock music with which listeners can truly identify for years to come.”

Currently, the band is writing, self producing, and promoting their forthcoming debut album, Riding in Fast Cars With Your Momma. With the anticipation mounting and expectations growing, this band is certainly on the rise, with bigger things expected in 2006 and beyond.
Formed in September of 2003 in Champaign, IL, Animate Objects is an amalgam of Chicago's finest Hip-Hop players. Two weeks after forming, the Objects won the Triangle Battle of the Bands, sending them on their way to the top of the local music scene. The band has received critical praise from independent music aficionados and novice listeners alike while opening for national acts including Digable Planets, Soul Position, The Opus, and Illogic/DJ Przm, Heiruspecs, Braille, and Voo Voo. In their earliest period, as a further contribution to the central Illinois music scene, the Animate Objects served as champion contributors helping lay the cornerstone for the foundation of the first student run record label in the Big Ten, Green Street Records. By serving as a dynamic force they helped usher the record label to acclaim as its historic story was brought to the eyes of the nation in Billboard magazine (March 23, 2004).

Or, The Whale

Or, the Whale is the band that if ever caught off guard by an onstage power outage would say, “Fuck it,” pull in tighter, and play and sing harder and louder than you’d hoped for in the first place.

Sure, the San Francisco-based band harbors seven members, so you could argue for strength in numbers. But writing off the impression that they inevitably leave isn’t so easy; with such a diverse group of musicians, there’s no shortage of skill and influence. Some members toured in punk bands, others played roots and funk music, and still another tested her pipes as a chamber music vocalist. At first glance, their histories seem random. But weave those experiences together and you get a sound you can feel.

Or, the Whale’s songs range from danceable, rhythm-charged country-rock ditties with swaggering bass lines and articulately stomped-out drums to indie pop-rock tunes with bopping piano, snapping drums, and loops of finger-plucked guitar that explode into electric riffs to add fuel to fervent vocals. Slow it down and throw in some four-part harmonies, vibrant organ passages, and rippling pedal steel, and songs escalate into thoughtful ballads.

When it comes down to it Or, the Whale’s music can fly spirited and boisterous or topple lonely and bereaved. Hell, sometimes it does all those things in one song. Stories of hope and longing emerge from soothing, stirring vocals and twangy rock instrumentation. The latest evidence of this is on their first full-length album, Light Poles and Pines.

At times, Light Poles and Pines is omnipotent and epic (“Life and Death at Sea”), painfully reflective (“Rope Don’t Break”), or both (“Fight Song”). On “Life and Death at Sea,” defeated, raspy lead vocals sink under a whining pedal steel until pulled up by a rousing harmony. The two voices blend and are joined for a powerful chorus that valiantly leads the song back into the light of hope. And really, that’s the secret behind Or, the Whale’s draw: their songs are honest, intelligent, musically compelling reflections that act like the light off of a beacon, shining over the darkest, choppiest waters.

The recent collaboration of Jo Little and Anna van Riel has brought to the deep south of New Zealand, a cornicopia of bluegrass, folk and contemporary rock, all stirred up into one big ol' melting to pot. The two officially meeting in a music history class and the rest is...you guessed it! Jo Little has spent the last three years playing it cool in the beautiful Milford sound, working, performing and sharing her tunes with the lucky folk of the Fiords. Her clever way with words and soulful alto vocals create some magic original compositions (www.myspace.com/jolittle). After hearing of this 'Amazing Jo Little' woman from local band and good friends 'Kramit', Anna decided to swoop in on a good opportunity. A keen songwriter and performer herself (www.myspace.com/annavanriel), van Riel approached Little asking if she would be prepared to have a run through of some original works. Her high range and witty play on old covers appealed to Little. They blended well immediately, throwing into the pot a combination of covers, originals, harmonies and harmonicas, bass, shakers and a flute for good measure, creating a toe tapping selection of funky folky, lounge style to keep the mood grooving all night long.
Jacquie Walters

New Zealand Singer-Songwriter Jacquie Walters has performed extensively throughout NZ and the UK for the last fifteen years, both as a soloist and as a member of “Freewheelin’” (UK) and “Pounamu” (NZ). She has also shared concert billing with renowned songwriter-performers such as John Wright, Jez Lowe, Eric Bogle, Kristina Olsen and Paul Ubana Jones.

During that time Walters has established herself as a well-respected name on the NZ, English and Scottish folk festival and club circuit. Her first solo album, titled “Dreamwalking” was released in 2000, tracks from which have received recognition in international songwriting competitions.

One of those, “Northern Songbird” has recently been recorded by English folk musician Kate Bramley, (Kate is a member of Jez Lowe’s band ‘The Bad Pennies’) on her critically acclaimed album “Little Canaan”.

Walters’ new CD “Step Into The Light” is now out, and features 13 finely-crafted original songs from the pop-like title track to the sparse and emotive “Harvest Of Tears”. Also included is ‘Icarus’, a tribute to the late New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange.

“Step Into The Light” is unquestionably one of the best examples of contemporary NZ folk music to be released in the last 10 years.

Some reviewers’ comments include:

• "A clear, crisp, and passionate recording." - Martyn Pepperell, ‘NZ Musician Magazine’

• ‘Step Into The Light’ is an engaging listen with a fine wine on a cosy evening." Steve Scott, ‘Waikato Times’

• This really is a beautiful album... a very fine songstress indeed..." Liz Barry, 'Good Morning Show' (TV1)

Slave called shiver are a female fronted power rock band out of Vienna, Austria, consisting of Alicia Bankhofer (voc) Philipp Rechthaler (guitar) Franz Gaiswinkler (drums) Thomas Wachter (bass).

The group formed in mid-2006, after bandmates Alicia and Philipp decided to leave their hobby music project at the time, Libido, to pursue music in a more serious direction. Franz was asked to join the band after playing a one-night gig at the ARGE in Salzburg. Thomas became the newest addition to the band in 2007.

The group recorded their first demo in late 2006 featuring the songs Sexy Oui Oui, Pressure and Waiting, which received encouraging feedback from peers and critics. 2007 brings more chances to test their mettle live and another productive stint in the studio.

The name of the band is taken from a song by Porcupine Tree, off the Stupid Dream album.

Vicky Andres

Vicky wrote and sang her first song at age three. Since then music has been her defining feature. She began playing guitar at age fourteen and even though things weren’t easy for her, she was determined to learn and soon music became her savior and escape. All self taught, she was influenced by the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page, soon developing a seasoned bluesy style and a sound that she made her own.
Her vocals have been described as a mix of Grace Slick and Ann Wilson with a little Melissa Etheridge thrown in. Strong, powerful and pleasing to the ear. Her ability to ROCK you can easily be compared to the great Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders.
She has tremendous respect for the gifts that come to her in the form of a song. She writes from her own truth and experiences. Most recently her writing has become much more upbeat and positive, boasting life is good and I’m gonna sing about it!
In 1998 she released “February Rising.” A first of many dreams to come true for this musician. A chance to share her music in recorded form. Then in 2002 came “Attitude and Gratitude.” This release showing much learned and considerable growth. Her current cd “That’s That” is by far the best yet. Her writing is creative, fresh and reels you in right away. Her guitar playing fiercely commands you to take notice.
Vicky has shared the stage with many including Phillip Walker, Tucker and Thomas, James Armstrong band, but her ultimate dream would be to share the bill with Live, her favorite band, for whom she has the utmost respect.
Joining Vicky are the amazing talents of Mike Chesk on bass. His experience and advice are to say the least are immensely valuable. On drums is Jason Dean who has been playing with Vicky for seven years. Jason is extremely versatile. He is a rhythmic gem. Vicky is currently promoting her current release and booking performances along the east coast.

“Vicky Andres should be acknowledged as being among the leading singer songwriters of her generation. Her songs –self confessional, passionate, life affirming, full of poetic imagery and always intelligent, combined with her rich, powerfully engaging, slightly on the edge voice and imaginative, sensitive guitar playing… draws the listener in and never lets up. Vicky is truly an outstanding talent. She needs to be heard by many!!!”
David Maxwell, Tonecool Records.

“Power and passion. An amazing singer and songwriter. Startlingly original,Vicky Andres has the chops to go all the way to the top.
